(I didn't know whether to put this in Ghost Pastas or Figure Pastas, so just move it if it's in the wrong place.)

This isn't something I made up. I'm not trolling. These experiences my mother and I had are completely true. I don't know if it was actually happening, or if our imaginations both coincidentally went crazy during the same night. But this is how I remember it.

I've been living in this house for almost 8 years now. My parents and I moved in Thanksgiving week of 2003 (I have brothers, but they're all older and have their own families, so it was just me and Mom and Dad). I was 11 at the time. I should mention that we built the house. That is, my dad is a building contractor, so he designed and had his crew build. There were no previous owners; the lot is just part of a subdivision in Idaho and wasn't an Indian burial ground as far as I know (lol Poltergeist). Totally normal and no known reasons for it to be haunted. But during the first few years of living here, some odd things happened. I can remember three instances, one of which was just science and my imagination tricking me. I'll talk about that one first.

(You can skip over this paragraph if you want. It's not important.) I have an upstairs bedroom, and a bathroom right next to it. Because I thought it would be awesome, my dad put in a sliding door between my room and the bathroom, that way I don't have go out into the hall if I have to pee. Anyway, a couple times a month, I would leave the bathroom and go into the hall, closing the door behind me. Suddenly, my bedroom door, which I believed was closed, would suddenly slam. The reverse happened as well - when I left my room, the bathroom door would slam. Whenever this happened, my tween brain would convince itself that the doors were haunted and I would refuse to use the upstairs bathroom for a few days until I calmed down. Years later, I found there was a reasonable explanation for this. The slamming door that I had thought was closed must have been slightly ajar; if I had the sliding door between the two rooms open, then closing my bathroom door would cause the bedroom door to slam shut because of air suction or something like that. No paranormal stuff, which was relieving.

Now for the confusing events.

Our computer room has glass double doors, so you can see the entry hall where the front door is. From where my computer is stationed in the room, you can't see the front door itself, but would be able to see anyone going in and out of it. One night, when I was... 13? 14? Anyway, one night I had snuck downstairs to get on the computer while my parents were asleep. (I did this often since they hardly let me on during the day.) It was pretty late, but I don't remember the actual time. Anytime between 11pm and 3am. I was messing around on the computer doing who-remembers-what when out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw my mom walk through the entry way to the front door where I couldn't see her anymore because the wall blocked the view (I figured she was going to lock the door and look out the window like she often does as part of her pre-bed routine). I froze, thinking I was going to get caught being out of bed so late. But I was also a bit puzzled, because the glimpse I had of my mom was a bit strange. She looked younger (she was in her late 40s, but this appearance of her seemed to be in her 20s or 30s) and was wearing a white nightgown. My mom didn't own a white nightgown though. I stared through the glass doors into the entry hall, waiting for my mother to reappear and yell at me to go to bed. But she didn't. After a few minutes, I curiously stood up and moved to where I could see the front door, but no one was there, and the door was still locked from the inside. Extremely unnerved, I immediately rushed upstairs and went to bed, trying to forget what I'd seen.

The very next morning, my mom woke up me at the regular time. Instead of banging on the wall to wake me, though, she came into my room and sat on my bed. "Kara, were you in our bedroom last night?" she asked. "Huh? No, I wasn't," I said. She narrowed her eyes at me. "Don't lie to me. Were you in our room last night or not?" "No, I swear, I wasn't! I was up on the computer, but something I saw freaked me out and I went to bed. I never went anywhere near your room," I explained. My mother's eyes widened and asked me what I saw. I told her everything I experienced the night before, and when I was finished, I asked her if it really was her I saw. She said no and looked nervous. Her expression shocked me, because I didn't expect her to believe my story. I asked her why she looked scared, and she said she had seen something last night as well. She told me what happened.

When you open my parents' master bedroom door, there's a short hallway. It leads to the main room and has a door to the master bathroom. My mom said that the previous night, at around 3 in the morning, she woke up to see a shadowy figure standing where the mini hallway meets the room. She knew it wasn't Dad, because he was snoring right next to her. She thought it might have been me, but there was something off about it. She closed her eyes and tried to go back to sleep. A few minutes later, she sensed someone standing near her side of the bed and breathing loudly (like people do over phones to annoy or freak the other person out). She was too afraid to open her eyes and look, but again knew it wasn't Dad because she clung onto him on the bed next to her as she tried to ignor it and sleep. Dad's snores didn't drown out the sound of the figure's breathing on her other side.

After sharing her story, my mom and I looked at each other, officially freaked out. It was one thing for us to see something spooky, but both of us on the same night? Something was up, and neither of us liked it. The fact that my mom was worried scared me even more because she never believed in ghost stories. Also, she isn't the type to lie and make something up like that as a joke. So we both went to Dad and told him what we'd seen. He didn't believe us, thinking we'd only dreamed it. But upon seeing how scared we were, he agreed to conduct a prayer to "dedicate the house" to get rid of evil presences (our religion's version of calling in a priest to flick around Holy Water). After the prayer, we never had another paranormal experience in the house. We still live here, and nothing strange has happened since.

Two years ago (2009), my American Character class was having a Halloween party. 60 students sat in a circle in a dark classroom and we all swapped ghost stories, some of which were real, some of which weren't (the teacher's tale was particularily frightening). I told them about the experiences my mom and I had. After hearing about seeing my "mom" in a white nightgown going to the front door, a few students looked at me in amazement and said that the same thing had happened to them but with a few slight changes. A girl had also seen a figure of her younger mother in a white nightgown, but she had appeared outside the house. A boy said he and his sister saw a figure of their old grandmother in a white nightgown go from room to room and also finally disappear at the front door. We wondered what the reason for the maternal figure in a white nightgown motif was.

Now I turn to you. Have any of you had an experience like this? What could be the explanation?

This has never happened to me. I'm 13, so perhaps the "correct age" is just around the corner though.

UPDATE:

I posted my story on my facebook notes and tagged some friends so they can read it and share their imput. About an hour ago, I got this message from my friend's little sister. She also lives in this subdivision. Here's what she said:

Quote :
i am going to inbox you this because i am sure that i was just having one of my teenage spurs on paranormal activity: ps. sorry for my horrible spelling.

my house, like yours was built by my parents who designed it and contractors worked on it. so people insist that it is impossible for this house to be haunted.

1. before there was even the subdivision Bear Creek and any of the houses were built, Dayton and i would walk around in the dirt lots and we found old horse shoes, an old tea kettle rusted, and many other odd things.

2. i have never personally seen an appiration but i have heard things before.

a. just a few weeks ago i heard ticking on my door late at night. i replied "come in" because i thought it was dayton wanting to come into my room. and it kept tapping. i said louder "come in!" but the tapping still continued so i got up and walked over to my door, opened it and nothing was there. i quickly left my room and asked dayton if she was the one. and she answered in her "i know everything" voice that i was just stupid and this house couldnt be haunted.

b. i had a few friends sleep over and me and my friend were by the stairs while my two other friends were in the computer room. my friend and i heard music coming from upstairs. we ran up there and stood in the room while the music was quietly still playing. it stopped after about 6 seconds of us being upstairs. i checked and made sure that there were no electronic devices that were on that could have made that sound, and there was nothing.

c. many of my friends and I have gotten cold spots and can often sense that something is standing there or you feel that you are being watched or that something is behind the door/curtain (i am not saying that we have a 6th sense by any means)

d. my best friend and i were taking pictures of our dog, Sampson, pouncing ontop of me. we looked at one of the pictures later that night and saw a glimmer in the photo (just like one that you would see on the movie Sixth Sense) we looked at everything in the picture and there was nothing that would cause a reflection of the flash and we went and checked the room later on too and there was again, nothing.

anyways.. i think that my house is haunted. i am sure that i am just a stupid teenager that has seen way to many scary movies and they are starting to get to my head.
HOPE THIS HELPS(:

Her "1." paragraph has gotten me thinking. She and my friend found all this old stuff on the property of this subdivision before it was built? What if I was wrong about the whole Indian burial ground thing? I mean, I don't think it was an actual Indian burial ground, but what was this land before? If I hear about anyone else in my area having weird experiences, I might do a little digging and find out what's going on with Bear Creek.

UPDATE:

Another message, this time from my friend called Cwess.

Quote :
I don't particularly believe in ghosts or anything either, but you've piqued my curiosity because, well, I've experienced something similar. I believe it was...two years ago. I was sitting on my computer, playing a game, when I started he...aring something in the background (over my headphones). It was one of those noises you hear everyday but all of a sudden it seems a little off. As an aside, I live in a very, very, very old house. There are three places in the house where, if you walk, it makes a popping and groaning noise. Normally I just write it off because, well, my house is my house. But this was two in the morning and no one would be walking around like that.

Now, my computer faces away from the entrance to the room, so I had to turn around something fierce. But when I did, I caught a glimpse of someone moving through my kitchen. My kitchen is a kind of central room that kind of ties everything together, and there's the living room on the other side. I thought it was hella weird because no one at my house actually WEARS a nightgown, and no one in my house is that young/thin. So I got up to check it out, and another creak happened on the other side of the kitchen. So I went through the kitchen to the hallway, and I didn't see anything, but the hallway creaked again like it does when someone walking on it goes back onto the more solid parts of the floor. But no one was there.

And the bed comment kind of gave me chills. For a long, long time I'd had a recurring nightmare that someone was watching me sleep. One night I was going to bed after brushing my teeth and all that routine stuff, and I had just laid down, when my door opened a peep. That in and of itself was incredibly odd considering I closed it seconds before.

I was about to go up and close it again, but I had this strange feeling that I really shouldn't. So I laid there, eyes closed, trying to get that feeling to go away. And, as you would expect, it didn't. Thankfully (or terribly depending on your perspective), though, having your eyes closed enhances your other senses. I didn't hear heavy breathing, but in the dead silence of the night I just heard a single, heavy sigh. I snapped my eyes open, and I managed to catch a glimpse of something standing there, maybe in a long black coat. I couldn't be sure. But just as soon as it was there, it disappeared. And when I looked, my door had splayed wide open, and I yet again heard a creak in the hallway like someone was walking there. I didn't even bother looking down the hall this time I was so terrified, so I closed my door and tried to go back to sleep. (Which is hard when your heart is beating and you've got chills.)

So, yes, I've had experience with that. And at first I thought they were half-dreams or plays with the light. Except for the fact that the bed thing kept happening for a while until I...guess it got bored? I legitimately tried to find out an explanation but I haven't had any luck with that. I don't think they're evil, but it's discontenting to say the least.

I replied:
Quote :
I wouldn't say that they're evil either. Well, I can't speak for my mother's experience with the figure by the bed, but I got no evil vibe from the woman in the nightgown. It was unsettling, but I didn't feel like I was going to be attacked or anything.

Thanks for sharing your story. I'm attempting to piece together clues about what's going on with the woman in white. And also what's up with Bear Creek subdivision and the surrounding area. (Another friend of mine who lives near said she's heard strange noises in her house, and before houses were built here, she found old stuff like horse shoes and a rusted tea kettle.) Perhaps it's not an Indian burial ground, but perhaps this land used to be part of a ranch or something.
